Example

The Joukowsky transform is the map J(z)=z+1zJ(z) = z + \dfrac{1}{z} on ℂ∖{0}\C \setminus \set{0}. It is holomorphic with J′(z)=1−z−2J'(z) = 1 - z^{-2}, which vanishes only at z=±1z = \pm 1. So JJ is a conformal map near each point other than 00 and ±1\pm 1.

Circles go to ellipses. For z=reiθz = r e^{i\theta} with r>1r > 1, J(z)=(r+1r)cos⁡θ+i(r−1r)sin⁡θ,J(z) = \left(r + \frac{1}{r}\right) \cos \theta + i \left(r - \frac{1}{r}\right) \sin \theta, so the circle ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r goes onto the ellipse with semi-axes r+1/rr + 1/r and r−1/rr - 1/r and foci ±2\pm 2. For r=1r = 1 one gets J(eiθ)=2cos⁡θJ(e^{i\theta}) = 2 \cos \theta, so the unit circle is folded onto the segment [−2,2][-2, 2].

The exterior of the unit disc is mapped bijectively onto ℂ∖[−2,2]\C \setminus [-2, 2]. Check of injectivity: J(z)−J(w)=(z−w)(1−1zw)J(z) - J(w) = (z - w)(1 - \frac{1}{zw}), and zw≠1zw \neq 1 when ∣z∣>1\abs{z} > 1 and ∣w∣>1\abs{w} > 1. Check of surjectivity: for c∈ℂc \in \C, the two roots of z2−cz+1=0z^2 - cz + 1 = 0 have product 11. If neither root has modulus greater than 11, both have modulus 11, and then c=2cos⁡θc = 2\cos\theta lies in [−2,2][-2, 2].

Remarks

Circles that pass through −1-1 or 11 and contain the other point go to curves with one sharp edge, the Joukowsky airfoils. This is why the map is used to model the flow of air around a wing. Some authors use 12(z+1/z)\frac{1}{2}(z + 1/z) instead, which only rescales the picture by 12\frac{1}{2}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
