Definition

Let KK be a field and let K×K^\times be its group of units, an abelian group. Let n≥2n \ge 2. Let TnT_n be the tensor product over ℤ\Z of nn copies of K×K^\times. Let Rn⊆TnR_n \subseteq T_n be the subgroup generated by all a1⊗⋯⊗ana_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes a_n with ai+aj=1a_i + a_j = 1 for some i<ji < j. The nn-th Milnor K-group of KK is the quotient KnM(K)=Tn/Rn.K_n^M(K) = T_n / R_n. Also K0M(K)=ℤK_0^M(K) = \Z and K1M(K)=K×K_1^M(K) = K^\times. The class of a1⊗⋯⊗ana_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes a_n is the symbol {a1,…,an}\set{a_1, \ldots, a_n}, and the group law of KnM(K)K_n^M(K) is written additively.

Remarks

Equivalently, K∗M(K)=⨁n≥0KnM(K)K_*^M(K) = \bigoplus_{n \ge 0} K_n^M(K) is the quotient of the tensor algebra of K×K^\times over ℤ\Z by the two-sided ideal generated by the elements a⊗(1−a)a \otimes (1 - a) with a≠0,1a \ne 0, 1. The relation {a,1−a}=0\set{a, 1 - a} = 0 is the Steinberg relation. Consequences: {a,−a}=0\set{a, -a} = 0 and {a,b}=−{b,a}\set{a, b} = -\set{b, a} for all a,b∈K×a, b \in K^\times. Example: in K2M(ℚ)K_2^M(\Q), {2,−1}=0\set{2, -1} = 0 since 2+(−1)=12 + (-1) = 1. Non-example: the element 2⊗(−1)2 \otimes (-1) of ℚ×⊗ℤℚ×\Q^\times \otimes_\Z \Q^\times is not zero. Indeed ℚ×\Q^\times is the product of {±1}\set{\pm 1} and the free abelian group on the primes. So 2⊗(−1)2 \otimes (-1) generates a direct summand ⟨2⟩⊗{±1}≅ℤ/2ℤ\langle 2 \rangle \otimes \set{\pm 1} \cong \Z/2\Z, where ⟨2⟩\langle 2 \rangle is the cyclic group generated by 22. Thus the tensor product alone is not K2M(ℚ)K_2^M(\Q). For a finite field 𝔽q\F_q, KnM(𝔽q)=0K_n^M(\F_q) = 0 for n≥2n \ge 2. By a theorem of Matsumoto, K2M(K)K_2^M(K) equals Quillen's K2(K)K_2(K).
