Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let ℝ0,n\mathbb{R}_{0,n} be the real Clifford algebra generated by e1,…,ene_1, \ldots, e_n with ej2=−1e_j^2 = -1 and ejek=−ekeje_j e_k = -e_k e_j for j≠kj \ne k. Let D=∑j=1nej∂∂xjD = \sum_{j=1}^{n} e_j \dfrac{\partial}{\partial x_j} be the Dirac operator on ℝn\R^n. Let U⊂ℝnU \subset \R^n be open and let f ⁣:U→ℝ0,nf \colon U \to \mathbb{R}_{0,n} have continuous first partial derivatives. The function ff is left monogenic on UU if Df=∑j=1nej∂f∂xj=0on U.D f = \sum_{j=1}^{n} e_j \frac{\partial f}{\partial x_j} = 0 \quad \text{on } U. It is right monogenic if ∑j∂f∂xjej=0\sum_{j} \dfrac{\partial f}{\partial x_j} e_j = 0 on UU.

Remarks

Example: identify x∈ℝnx \in \R^n with ∑jxjej\sum_j x_j e_j, so that x2=−∣x∣2x^2 = -\abs{x}^2. The Cauchy kernel E(x)=xˉ∣x∣nE(x) = \dfrac{\bar x}{\abs{x}^n} with xˉ=−x\bar x = -x is left and right monogenic on ℝn∖{0}\R^n \setminus \set{0}. A simpler example is f(x)=x1e1−x2e2f(x) = x_1 e_1 - x_2 e_2, since Df=e1e1−e2e2=−1+1=0Df = e_1 e_1 - e_2 e_2 = -1 + 1 = 0.

Non-example: f(x)=x=∑jxjejf(x) = x = \sum_j x_j e_j is not monogenic, since Df=∑jej2=−n≠0Df = \sum_j e_j^2 = -n \ne 0.

Since D2=−ΔD^2 = -\Delta, with Δ\Delta the Laplacian, each real component of a left monogenic function of class C2C^2 is harmonic. Many authors use instead the generalized Cauchy–Riemann operator ∂x0+∑j=1nej∂xj\partial_{x_0} + \sum_{j=1}^{n} e_j \partial_{x_j} on ℝn+1\R^{n+1}; for n=1n = 1 it gives back holomorphic functions.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
