Statement
Let be a von Neumann algebra on a separable complex Hilbert space, with commutant . Assume that is a factor, that is, its center is . For orthogonal projections , write if there is a partial isometry with and . Write if for some projection with . Call finite if implies . Then:
- for all projections , or ;
- there is a dimension function from the projections of to . It is unique up to a positive scalar factor. It satisfies: if and only if . Also when . And if and only if is finite;
- after normalization, the range of is exactly one of the following sets, which defines the type of . The set gives type , for . The set gives type . The interval gives type . The interval gives type . The set gives type ;
- has type or if and only if for a Hilbert space of dimension or , respectively. Here is the algebra of bounded operators on .
Remarks
The comparison in part 1 comes from a maximality argument. Take a maximal family of pairwise orthogonal equivalent pieces of and . It exhausts or , since otherwise, in a factor, the two remainders would contain further equivalent nonzero pieces. The dimension function is built by cutting projections into many equivalent pieces and counting, much as a length is measured with smaller and smaller rulers. In type , is the restriction of the unique faithful normal tracial state to the projections.
Examples: has type , with . The hyperfinite type II1 factor has type . The tensor product of a type factor with has type . Factors of type also exist; they admit no nonzero normal semifinite trace.
The hypothesis that is a factor is needed: for the non-factor acting diagonally on , the two projections and are not comparable, so part 1 fails.
Going deeper
For a student
Every von Neumann algebra on a separable Hilbert space is a direct integral of factors, so factors are the building blocks of the theory. The classification by types is the first step; the next steps distinguish factors within one type. Type factors are completely understood by part 4. Type factors are further divided by Connes into types , , using Tomita–Takesaki theory. Type factors carry a trace and are studied through subfactors and free probability.
