Mechanics of deformable solids Nonlinear elasticity Example
Neo-Hookean solid
Builds on Strain energy density functionCauchy–Green deformation tensor
Example
The incompressible neo-Hookean solid is the hyperelastic material with the strain energy density function below. Here is the deformation gradient, is the first invariant of the right Cauchy–Green tensor and is a constant. Since , the first Piola–Kirchhoff stress is . The Cauchy stress is , with a pressure fixed by equilibrium and boundary conditions. Check in simple tension with stretch : , and the lateral faces are free, so . Then the axial stress is . For with small , this is about , which matches linear elasticity with shear modulus and Young's modulus of an incompressible material. Compressible versions add a term depending on ; several different forms are in use.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
