Mechanics of deformable solids Nonlinear elasticity Concept
Strain energy density function
Summary
A strain energy density function gives the elastic energy stored per unit volume of a body as a function of the local deformation. Its derivative with respect to the deformation gradient is the stress. Choosing this one scalar function fixes the whole elastic response of a material, and it makes variational methods available in elasticity.
