Example

The Saint Venant–Kirchhoff model is the hyperelastic material with the strain energy density function below. W=λ2(tr⁡E)2+μtr⁡(E2),E=12(FTF−I).W = \frac{\lambda}{2}(\tr E)^2 + \mu \tr(E^2), \qquad E = \tfrac12(F^T F - I). Here FF is the deformation gradient, EE is the Green–Lagrange strain tensor and λ,μ\lambda, \mu are the Lamé parameters. Its second Piola–Kirchhoff stress is S=∂W/∂E=λ(tr⁡E)I+2μES = \partial W / \partial E = \lambda (\tr E) I + 2\mu E. Check: WW depends on FF only through FTFF^T F, so W(QF)=W(F)W(QF) = W(F) for every rotation QQ, and the model is frame-indifferent. For small displacement gradients EE is close to the small strain, and the model reduces to isotropic linear elasticity. It behaves badly under strong compression: as F→0F \to 0, E→−12IE \to -\tfrac12 I and WW stays finite. So the energy does not prevent a volume element from being crushed to zero volume.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
