Nesbitt's inequality
Builds on Cauchy–Schwarz inequalityInequality of arithmetic and geometric means
Statement
Let be positive real numbers. Then with equality if and only if .
Remarks
Proof idea: let . Adding to each fraction gives , so the left side equals . By the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality, or the inequality between arithmetic and harmonic means, . Since the first factor is , the left side is at least .
Example: , gives .
There is no upper bound: for and the left side tends to .

For a student
Nesbitt's inequality is a standard first example of a symmetric inequality in three variables. It has many proofs: by the means inequalities, by the rearrangement inequality, or by clearing denominators and using Muirhead's inequality. Comparing the proofs is a good way to learn the toolbox of elementary inequalities.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
