Functional analysis Banach algebras Theorem
Nonemptiness of the spectrum
Builds on Spectrum of an elementComplex numbers
Statement
Let be a Banach algebra over the complex numbers with unit . For , let be the spectrum of . Then is nonempty for every .
Remarks
Proof idea: suppose is empty. Then the resolvent is defined on all of . For each continuous linear functional on , the function is entire and tends to as . By Liouville's theorem it is zero, and by the Hahn–Banach theorem this forces , which is impossible since . Together with the compactness of the spectrum, the spectrum of every element is a nonempty compact subset of .
Example: in the algebra of continuous complex functions with the sup norm, the spectrum of is its range , which is nonempty.
The complex scalars are needed. In the real Banach algebra of real matrices, the rotation minus has determinant for every real , so its real spectrum is empty. The condition is also needed: in the zero algebra every element is invertible.

For a student
This result is the first step of spectral theory in Banach algebras. It gives the Gelfand–Mazur theorem: a complex Banach division algebra is . It also makes the spectral radius well defined, which is the subject of Gelfand's spectral radius formula.
