Definition
Let be a C*-algebra with unit , and let be normal, that is, . Let be the spectrum of , and let be the C*-algebra of continuous functions with the sup norm. There is a unique -homomorphism with and , where is the inclusion of into . The map is the continuous functional calculus of , and for one writes .
Remarks
Existence comes from the commutative Gelfand–Naimark theorem applied to the commutative C*-algebra generated by and , whose character space is homeomorphic to . Uniqueness holds because the polynomials in and are dense in , by the Stone–Weierstrass theorem. The map is isometric, its image is , and .
Example: and with unitary and . Here and . This map is linear, multiplicative, preserves adjoints, sends to and to .
Non-example: in is not normal. Its spectrum is , so is the zero function on , and any linear map sends it to . So no such exists, and normality cannot be dropped.
