Functional analysis Banach algebras Theorem
Spectral mapping theorem for polynomials
Builds on Spectrum of an elementNonemptiness of the spectrumPolynomial ring
Statement
Let be a complex Banach algebra with unit , let , and let be a polynomial. Let denote the spectrum of . Then
Remarks
Proof idea: if is constant equal to , both sides are , using the nonemptiness of the spectrum. Otherwise fix and factor with . Then , a product of commuting factors. A product of commuting elements is invertible if and only if each factor is invertible. So if and only if some root of lies in , that is, if and only if for some .
Example: if is a complex matrix with eigenvalues and , then has the single eigenvalue , matching for .

For a student
The theorem gives , which is the easy half of Gelfand's spectral radius formula. It extends to holomorphic functions in the holomorphic functional calculus, and to continuous functions of normal elements in the continuous functional calculus of C*-algebras.
