Definition
Let be an integral scheme with function field . For each open affine subscheme of , let be the integral closure of in its field of fractions . The normalization of is the integral scheme with a morphism such that, for every such :
- is isomorphic to ;
- under this isomorphism, restricted to is the morphism induced by the inclusion .
It is obtained by gluing the schemes , and it is unique up to unique isomorphism over .
Remarks
The scheme is normal. For every normal integral scheme and every dominant morphism , there is a unique morphism with . Example: let over a field , with and . Its fraction field is , and is integral over since ; also is integrally closed, so . The normalization of the cusp is , . Non-example: the identity morphism of the cusp is not its normalization, since the cusp is not normal and . If is normal, then is an isomorphism.
