Definition

Let a surface exchange heat by convection with a fluid of thermal conductivity kf>0k_f > 0. Let hh be the heat transfer coefficient and L>0L > 0 a characteristic length of the flow. The Nusselt number is the dimensionless number Nu=hLkf.\mathrm{Nu} = \frac{h L}{k_f}.

Remarks

The length is, for example, the diameter of a pipe or the length of a plate along the flow.

Example: in a fluid layer of thickness LL at rest between plates at temperatures T1T_1 and T2T_2, the flux is kf(T1−T2)/Lk_f (T_1 - T_2) / L. So h=kf/Lh = k_f / L and Nu=1\mathrm{Nu} = 1.

Non-example: the number hL/ksh L / k_s with the conductivity ksk_s of the solid wall is not the Nusselt number. It is the Biot number, which compares resistances inside and at the surface of the solid.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
