Definition

Consider a flow with characteristic speed UU and characteristic length LL that transports a scalar with diffusivity D>0D > 0, as in the advection–diffusion equation. The Péclet number of the flow is Pe=ULD.\mathrm{Pe} = \frac{U L}{D}. For heat transport DD is the thermal diffusivity α\alpha, and for mass transport it is the molecular diffusivity of the solute.

Remarks

With x=Lx^x = L \hat x, t=(L/U)t^t = (L / U) \hat t and u=Uu^u = U \hat u, the equation ct+u⋅∇c=DΔcc_t + u \cdot \nabla c = D \Delta c becomes ct^+u^⋅∇^c=Pe−1Δ^cc_{\hat t} + \hat u \cdot \hat\nabla c = \mathrm{Pe}^{-1} \hat\Delta c. So Pe\mathrm{Pe} is the only parameter of the dimensionless equation.

For heat, Pe=Re⋅Pr\mathrm{Pe} = \mathrm{Re} \cdot \mathrm{Pr}, the product of the Reynolds number UL/νU L / \nu and the Prandtl number ν/α\nu / \alpha; for mass, Pe=Re⋅Sc\mathrm{Pe} = \mathrm{Re} \cdot \mathrm{Sc} with the Schmidt number Sc=ν/D\mathrm{Sc} = \nu / D.

Example: water flowing at U=1U = 1 cm/s in a channel of width L=1L = 1 cm carrying a solute with D=10−5D = 10^{-5} cm2^2/s has Pe=105\mathrm{Pe} = 10^{5}, so advection dominates.

Non-example: UL/νU L / \nu, with the kinematic viscosity ν\nu in place of DD, is the Reynolds number, not the Péclet number; it compares advection with diffusion of momentum, not of the scalar.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
