Plummer model
Builds on Poisson's equationLane–Emden equationJeans's theorem
Example
Let be a total mass, a scale length and the gravitational constant. Let be the distance from the centre. The Plummer model has density and potential
Check of Poisson's equation : here , whose derivative is . Dividing by gives . The mass inside radius is , which tends to as .
It is a polytrope of index : , and solves the Lane–Emden equation of index .
Remarks
By Jeans's theorem, the distribution function for , and otherwise, where , is a steady isotropic stellar system whose density is the Plummer density. The half-mass radius solves , which gives . Plummer introduced the model to fit the light of globular clusters, and it is the standard initial condition in simulations of star clusters.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
