Prime ideal in a noncommutative ring
Builds on RingTwo-sided ideal
Definition
Let be a ring. A two-sided ideal of is prime if the following hold.
- .
- For all two-sided ideals of , if , then or .
Here is the ideal generated by the products with and .
Remarks
Equivalently, and, for all , implies or ; and is prime if and only if is a prime ring. Example: the zero ideal of is prime, since the only two-sided ideals are and , and . Non-example: the zero ideal of fails clause 2 with and , since . A completely prime ideal is one with or ; it is prime, but the zero ideal of shows the converse fails. For a commutative ring both notions agree with the usual prime ideal.
