Proof

We compare coefficients in a polynomial identity in an extra variable tt. This is the generating-function proof, cut off at a finite degree so that only polynomials appear.

  1. Let RR be a commutative ring, let n≥1n \ge 1, and let A=R[x1,…,xn]A = R[x_1, \dots, x_n] be the polynomial ring. We work in the polynomial ring A[t]A[t].
  2. Let eke_k be the elementary symmetric polynomials, with e0=1e_0 = 1 and ek=0e_k = 0 for k>nk > n. Let pkp_k be the power sums.
  3. Let E(t)=∏i=1n(1+xit)E(t) = \prod_{i=1}^n (1 + x_i t). Expanding, choose 11 or xitx_i t from each factor. A choice is a subset S⊆{1,…,n}S \subseteq \set{1, \dots, n}, and it contributes t∣S∣∏i∈Sxit^{\abs{S}} \prod_{i \in S} x_i. So E(t)=∑j≥0ejtjE(t) = \sum_{j \ge 0} e_j t^j.
  4. For each ii, let Ei(t)=∏j≠i(1+xjt)E_i(t) = \prod_{j \neq i} (1 + x_j t). In the same way, Ei(t)=∑j≥0ej(i)tjE_i(t) = \sum_{j \ge 0} e^{(i)}_j t^j. Here ej(i)e^{(i)}_j is the sum of the products of jj distinct variables other than xix_i.
  5. Fix k≥1k \ge 1. For each ii, let Qi(t)=∑m=1k(−1)m−1ximtmQ_i(t) = \sum_{m=1}^{k} (-1)^{m-1} x_i^m t^m.
  6. The product (1+xit)Qi(t)(1 + x_i t) Q_i(t) telescopes: the term (−1)m−1ximtm(-1)^{m-1} x_i^m t^m of QiQ_i cancels against xitx_i t times the term with m−1m - 1. So (1+xit)Qi(t)=xit+(−1)k−1xik+1tk+1(1 + x_i t) Q_i(t) = x_i t + (-1)^{k-1} x_i^{k+1} t^{k+1}.
  7. Since E(t)=(1+xit)Ei(t)E(t) = (1 + x_i t) E_i(t), step 6 gives E(t)Qi(t)=xitEi(t)+(−1)k−1xik+1tk+1Ei(t)E(t) Q_i(t) = x_i t E_i(t) + (-1)^{k-1} x_i^{k+1} t^{k+1} E_i(t).
  8. Summing over ii, and using ∑iQi(t)=∑m=1k(−1)m−1pmtm\sum_i Q_i(t) = \sum_{m=1}^{k} (-1)^{m-1} p_m t^m, we get E(t)∑m=1k(−1)m−1pmtm=∑i=1nxitEi(t)+tk+1H(t)E(t) \sum_{m=1}^{k} (-1)^{m-1} p_m t^m = \sum_{i=1}^n x_i t E_i(t) + t^{k+1} H(t) for some H(t)∈A[t]H(t) \in A[t].
  9. The coefficient of tkt^k on the left is ∑m=1k(−1)m−1ek−mpm\sum_{m=1}^{k} (-1)^{m-1} e_{k-m} p_m, by step 3. The term tk+1H(t)t^{k+1} H(t) has no tkt^k term.
  10. By step 4, the coefficient of tkt^k in ∑ixitEi(t)\sum_i x_i t E_i(t) is ∑i=1nxiek−1(i)\sum_{i=1}^n x_i e^{(i)}_{k-1}.
  11. Each term of xiek−1(i)x_i e^{(i)}_{k-1} is ∏j∈Sxj\prod_{j \in S} x_j for a kk-element set SS with i∈Si \in S. So each kk-element set SS appears once for each i∈Si \in S, that is, kk times. Hence ∑ixiek−1(i)=k ek\sum_i x_i e^{(i)}_{k-1} = k \, e_k.
  12. This also holds for k>nk > n, where both sides are 00, since there are no kk-element subsets.
  13. Comparing the coefficients of tkt^k in step 8 gives k ek=∑i=1k(−1)i−1ek−i pik \, e_k = \sum_{i=1}^{k} (-1)^{i-1} e_{k-i} \, p_i for every k≥1k \ge 1.

Idea

The polynomial E(t)=∏(1+xit)E(t) = \prod (1 + x_i t) has the eke_k as coefficients. Multiplying it by an alternating sum of power sums gives tt times the derivative of E(t)E(t), up to terms of high degree. The coefficient of tkt^k in tE′(t)t E'(t) is kekk e_k, which gives the identity.
