Proof of the absorption laws in a lattice
Builds on LatticeJoin and meetPartial order
Proof
We use the description of the join and the meet as least upper and greatest lower bounds.
- If the lattice is given in algebraic form, the two absorption laws are among its axioms, and there is nothing to prove.
- So let be a partially ordered set in which every two elements have a join and a meet. Let , and put .
- The meet is a lower bound of , so .
- The element is an upper bound of , since by reflexivity and by Step 3.
- Every upper bound of satisfies , by the definition of an upper bound.
- By Steps 4 and 5, is the least upper bound of . The least upper bound is unique by antisymmetry, so .
- Now put . The join is an upper bound of , so .
- The element is a lower bound of , since and .
- Every lower bound of satisfies .
- By Steps 8 and 9, is the greatest lower bound of , which is unique by antisymmetry. So .
Idea
The element lies below , so joining it with adds nothing: is already the smallest element above both. Dually, lies above , so meeting it with gives back .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
