Proof

We expand the product by induction on the number of factors and compare coefficients.

  1. Let RR be a commutative ring and let r1,…,rn∈Rr_1, \dots, r_n \in R. For 0≤m≤n0 \le m \le n and 0≤k≤m0 \le k \le m, let ek(m)=ek(r1,…,rm)e^{(m)}_k = e_k(r_1, \dots, r_m) be the elementary symmetric polynomial eke_k evaluated at r1,…,rmr_1, \dots, r_m. Put e0(m)=1e^{(m)}_0 = 1, and ek(m)=0e^{(m)}_k = 0 for k<0k < 0 or k>mk > m.
  2. So ek(m)e^{(m)}_k is the sum, over the kk-element subsets SS of {1,…,m}\set{1, \dots, m}, of ∏i∈Sri\prod_{i \in S} r_i.
  3. Claim: Pm=(x−r1)⋯(x−rm)P_m = (x - r_1) \cdots (x - r_m) equals ∑k=0m(−1)kek(m)xm−k\sum_{k=0}^{m} (-1)^k e^{(m)}_k x^{m-k} in the polynomial ring R[x]R[x]. For m=0m = 0 both sides are 11.
  4. The kk-element subsets of {1,…,m+1}\set{1, \dots, m+1} either omit m+1m+1, or are T∪{m+1}T \cup \set{m+1} with TT a (k−1)(k-1)-element subset of {1,…,m}\set{1, \dots, m}. So ek(m+1)=ek(m)+rm+1ek−1(m)e^{(m+1)}_k = e^{(m)}_k + r_{m+1} e^{(m)}_{k-1} for 0≤k≤m+10 \le k \le m+1.
  5. Assume the claim for mm. Then Pm+1=(x−rm+1)Pm=∑k(−1)kek(m)xm+1−k−∑k(−1)krm+1ek(m)xm−kP_{m+1} = (x - r_{m+1}) P_m = \sum_k (-1)^k e^{(m)}_k x^{m+1-k} - \sum_k (-1)^k r_{m+1} e^{(m)}_k x^{m-k}.
  6. In the second sum, put j=k+1j = k + 1. The coefficient of xm+1−jx^{m+1-j} in Pm+1P_{m+1} is then (−1)jej(m)+(−1)jrm+1ej−1(m)(-1)^j e^{(m)}_j + (-1)^{j} r_{m+1} e^{(m)}_{j-1}.
  7. By step 4 this is (−1)jej(m+1)(-1)^j e^{(m+1)}_j, for 0≤j≤m+10 \le j \le m+1. This proves the claim for m+1m + 1.
  8. Now let f=anxn+⋯+a0=an(x−r1)⋯(x−rn)f = a_n x^n + \dots + a_0 = a_n (x - r_1) \cdots (x - r_n). By the claim with m=nm = n, f=∑k=0nan(−1)kek(r1,…,rn)xn−kf = \sum_{k=0}^{n} a_n (-1)^k e_k(r_1, \dots, r_n) x^{n-k}.
  9. Two polynomials are equal exactly when their coefficients are equal. Comparing the coefficients of xn−kx^{n-k} gives an−k=(−1)kanek(r1,…,rn)a_{n-k} = (-1)^k a_n e_k(r_1, \dots, r_n).
  10. Multiplying by (−1)k(-1)^k gives an ek(r1,…,rn)=(−1)kan−ka_n \, e_k(r_1, \dots, r_n) = (-1)^k a_{n-k} for 1≤k≤n1 \le k \le n.

Idea

Multiplying out (x−r1)⋯(x−rn)(x - r_1) \cdots (x - r_n) means choosing xx or −ri-r_i from each factor. Choosing −ri-r_i from kk factors gives (−1)k(-1)^k times a product of kk roots in front of xn−kx^{n-k}. Summing over all choices gives eke_k, and comparing with the coefficients of ff gives the formulas.
