Number theory Proof

Proof that a composite number has a prime factor at most its square root

Builds on Composite numberPrime numberExistence of a prime divisorDivisibility

Proof

  1. Let nn be a composite number. Then n>1n > 1 and nn is not a prime number.
  2. So nn has a positive divisor aa with a≠1a \neq 1 and a≠na \neq n. Write n=abn = a b with an integer bb.
  3. Since n>0n > 0 and a>0a > 0, b≥1b \ge 1, so a≤na \le n. Hence 1<a<n1 < a < n.
  4. Then b=n/ab = n / a satisfies 1<b<n1 < b < n. If b=1b = 1 then a=na = n, and if b=nb = n then a=1a = 1; both are excluded.
  5. By swapping aa and bb if needed, we may assume a≤ba \le b. Then a2≤ab=na^2 \le a b = n.
  6. By the existence of a prime divisor, since a≥2a \ge 2, there is a prime pp with p∣ap \mid a.
  7. Since pp is a positive divisor of the positive integer aa, p≤ap \le a. So p2≤a2≤np^2 \le a^2 \le n.
  8. Since p∣ap \mid a and a∣na \mid n, p∣np \mid n. So pp is a prime factor of nn with p2≤np^2 \le n, that is, p≤np \le \sqrt{n}.

Idea

A composite number splits as n=abn = ab with two factors larger than 11. The smaller factor is at most n\sqrt{n}, since otherwise the product would exceed nn. Any prime factor of this smaller factor works.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
