Combinatorics Proof

Proof that every walk contains a path

Builds on WalkPathStrong induction

Proof

We argue by strong induction on the length kk of the walk.

  1. Claim for each k∈ℕk \in \N: let WW be a walk of length kk from a vertex uu to a vertex vv. Then there is a path from uu to vv whose vertices and edges all belong to WW.
  2. Let W=(w0,w1,…,wk)W = (w_0, w_1, \dots, w_k) be a walk from uu to vv, and assume the claim for all lengths smaller than kk.
  3. If the vertices w0,…,wkw_0, \dots, w_k are pairwise distinct, then WW itself is a path, and we are done.
  4. Otherwise there are indices 0≤i<j≤k0 \le i < j \le k with wi=wjw_i = w_j.
  5. Let W′=(w0,…,wi,wj+1,…,wk)W' = (w_0, \dots, w_i, w_{j+1}, \dots, w_k). If j=kj = k, this is W′=(w0,…,wi)W' = (w_0, \dots, w_i).
  6. W′W' is a walk: consecutive vertices inside the two blocks are adjacent in WW, and wi=wj∼wj+1w_i = w_j \sim w_{j+1} when j<kj < k.
  7. W′W' starts at w0=uw_0 = u. It ends at wk=vw_k = v if j<kj < k, and at wi=wj=wk=vw_i = w_j = w_k = v if j=kj = k.
  8. The vertices of W′W' are vertices of WW. Its edges are edges of WW, because the only new edge wiwj+1w_i w_{j+1} equals the edge wjwj+1w_j w_{j+1} of WW.
  9. The length of W′W' is k−(j−i)<kk - (j - i) < k. By the induction hypothesis, W′W' contains a path from uu to vv as in the claim.
  10. By step 8, the vertices and edges of that path are vertices and edges of WW. This proves the claim for kk, and hence the statement.

Idea

If a walk visits some vertex twice, the part between the two visits is a detour. Cutting it out gives a shorter walk with the same ends, and this cannot go on forever.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 15 pages in order. The foundations come first. The path takes the proof Proof of strong induction from ordinary induction.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.
