Number theory Proof

Proof that the sum of the powers of a primitive root of unity is zero

Builds on Primitive root of unityThe complex numbers form a field

Proof

We show that multiplying the sum by ζ\zeta does not change it.

  1. Let n≥2n \ge 2 be an integer and let ζ\zeta be a primitive nnth root of unity. By definition, ζn=1\zeta^n = 1 and ζk≠1\zeta^k \neq 1 for each integer kk with 1≤k<n1 \le k < n.
  2. Since n≥2n \ge 2, the integer k=1k = 1 satisfies 1≤k<n1 \le k < n. So step 1 gives ζ≠1\zeta \neq 1.
  3. Let S=∑k=0n−1ζk=1+ζ+⋯+ζn−1S = \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} \zeta^k = 1 + \zeta + \dots + \zeta^{n-1}.
  4. Multiplication in ℂ\C distributes over addition, since ℂ\C is a field. So ζS=∑k=0n−1ζk+1=ζ+ζ2+⋯+ζn\zeta S = \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} \zeta^{k+1} = \zeta + \zeta^2 + \dots + \zeta^{n}.
  5. By step 1, the last term is ζn=1\zeta^n = 1. So ζS=1+ζ+⋯+ζn−1=S\zeta S = 1 + \zeta + \dots + \zeta^{n-1} = S.
  6. Subtracting SS from both sides of step 5 gives (ζ−1)S=0(\zeta - 1) S = 0.
  7. By step 2, ζ−1≠0\zeta - 1 \neq 0. Since ℂ\C is a field, ζ−1\zeta - 1 has an inverse (ζ−1)−1(\zeta - 1)^{-1}.
  8. Multiplying step 6 by (ζ−1)−1(\zeta - 1)^{-1} gives S=0S = 0. So 1+ζ+ζ2+⋯+ζn−1=01 + \zeta + \zeta^2 + \dots + \zeta^{n-1} = 0.

Idea

Multiplying the sum by ζ\zeta shifts every power up by one. The top power ζn\zeta^n equals 11 and takes the place of the bottom term, so the sum is unchanged. A number fixed by multiplication by some ζ≠1\zeta \neq 1 must be 00.
