Definition

Let ๐’ž\mathcal{C} be a small exact category. Write Aโ†ฃBA \rightarrowtail B for an admissible monomorphism and Bโ† CB \twoheadrightarrow C for an admissible epimorphism of ๐’ž\mathcal{C}. The Q-construction Q๐’žQ\mathcal{C} is the category defined as follows.

  1. The objects of Q๐’žQ\mathcal{C} are the objects of ๐’ž\mathcal{C}.
  2. A morphism Mโ†’NM \to N in Q๐’žQ\mathcal{C} is an isomorphism class of diagrams Mโ†žNโ€ฒโ†ฃNM \twoheadleftarrow N' \rightarrowtail N in ๐’ž\mathcal{C}. Two diagrams Mโ†žNโ€ฒโ†ฃNM \twoheadleftarrow N' \rightarrowtail N and Mโ†žNโ€ฒโ€ฒโ†ฃNM \twoheadleftarrow N'' \rightarrowtail N are isomorphic when an isomorphism Nโ€ฒโ†’Nโ€ฒโ€ฒN' \to N'' makes both triangles commute.
  3. The composite of Mโ†žNโ€ฒโ†ฃNM \twoheadleftarrow N' \rightarrowtail N and Nโ†žPโ€ฒโ†ฃPN \twoheadleftarrow P' \rightarrowtail P is Mโ†žNโ€ฒร—NPโ€ฒโ†ฃPM \twoheadleftarrow N' \times_N P' \rightarrowtail P, where Nโ€ฒร—NPโ€ฒN' \times_N P' is the pullback of Nโ€ฒโ†ฃNN' \rightarrowtail N along Pโ€ฒโ† NP' \twoheadrightarrow N.

Let BQ๐’žBQ\mathcal{C} be the geometric realization of the nerve of Q๐’žQ\mathcal{C}, and let 00 be a zero object of ๐’ž\mathcal{C}. For nโ‰ฅ0n \ge 0, the nn-th K-group of ๐’ž\mathcal{C} is the homotopy group Kn(๐’ž)=ฯ€n+1(BQ๐’ž,0).K_n(\mathcal{C}) = \pi_{n+1}(BQ\mathcal{C}, 0).

Remarks

The pullback in clause 3 exists because admissible monomorphisms are stable under pullback along admissible epimorphisms, and the two composites Nโ€ฒร—NPโ€ฒโ†ฃPโ€ฒโ†ฃPN' \times_N P' \rightarrowtail P' \rightarrowtail P and Nโ€ฒร—NPโ€ฒโ† Nโ€ฒโ† MN' \times_N P' \twoheadrightarrow N' \twoheadrightarrow M are again admissible. Each admissible monomorphism iโ€‰โฃ:Mโ†ฃNi \colon M \rightarrowtail N gives the morphism Mโ†žMโ†ฃNM \twoheadleftarrow M \rightarrowtail N (identity on the left), and each admissible epimorphism pโ€‰โฃ:Nโ† Mp \colon N \twoheadrightarrow M gives the morphism Mโ†žNโ†ฃNM \twoheadleftarrow N \rightarrowtail N (identity on the right). Quillen proved that ฯ€1(BQ๐’ž,0)\pi_1(BQ\mathcal{C}, 0) is the Grothendieck group K0(๐’ž)K_0(\mathcal{C}), so the definition is right in degree 00.

Example: for a ring RR, the category ๐’ซ(R)\mathcal{P}(R) of finitely generated projective left RR-modules, with the split short exact sequences, is exact, and Kn(๐’ซ(R))K_n(\mathcal{P}(R)) is the Quillen K-group Kn(R)K_n(R).

Non-example: in ๐’ซ(โ„ค)\mathcal{P}(\Z), the diagram 0โ†žโ„คโ†’โ€‰2โ€‰โ„ค0 \twoheadleftarrow \Z \xrightarrow{\,2\,} \Z is not a morphism of Q๐’ซ(โ„ค)Q\mathcal{P}(\Z). Multiplication by 22 is a monomorphism, but it is not admissible, because its cokernel โ„ค/2\Z/2 is not a projective โ„ค\Z-module.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
