Definition

Let GG be a locally compact abelian group, and let G^\widehat{G} be its Pontryagin dual. Let μ\mu be a finite regular complex measure on the Borel sets of GG. Its Fourier–Stieltjes transform is the function μ^(γ)=∫Gγ(x)‾ dμ(x)\hat\mu(\gamma) = \int_G \overline{\gamma(x)} \, d\mu(x) for γ∈G^\gamma \in \widehat{G}. The measure μ\mu is a Rajchman measure if μ^\hat\mu vanishes at infinity on G^\widehat{G}. This means that for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is a compact set K⊆G^K \subseteq \widehat{G} with ∣μ^(γ)∣<ε\abs{\hat\mu(\gamma)} < \varepsilon for all γ∉K\gamma \notin K.

Remarks

On the circle 𝕋=ℝ/2πℤ\mathbb{T} = \R / 2\pi\Z, the dual is ℤ\Z, and the condition reads μ^(n)=∫e−int dμ(t)→0\hat\mu(n) = \int e^{-int} \, d\mu(t) \to 0 as ∣n∣→∞\abs{n} \to \infty.

Example: let dμ=f dtd\mu = f \, dt with f∈L1(𝕋)f \in L^1(\mathbb{T}). Then μ^(n)\hat\mu(n) is the nn-th Fourier coefficient of ff up to a constant factor, and it tends to 00 by the Riemann–Lebesgue lemma. So every absolutely continuous measure is Rajchman.

Non-example: the point mass δ0\delta_0 has δ^0(n)=1\hat\delta_0(n) = 1 for every nn, so it is not Rajchman. The Cantor measure on the middle-thirds Cantor set, viewed on ℝ/ℤ\R/\Z, is not Rajchman either. It is invariant under x↦3x mod 1x \mapsto 3x \bmod 1, so its coefficients at n=3kn = 3^k all equal its coefficient at n=1n = 1, which is not 00.

The Rajchman measures form a closed ideal of the measure algebra M(G)M(G) that contains L1(G)L^1(G). Menshov showed that there are singular measures on the circle that are Rajchman.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
