Definition

Let nβ‰₯1n \ge 1, let V={1,…,n}V = \set{1, \dots, n}, and let 𝒒n\mathcal{G}_n be the finite set of all simple graphs with vertex set VV. A random graph on VV is a probability measure β„™\mathbb{P} on 𝒒n\mathcal{G}_n. That is, it is a map ℙ ⁣:𝒒nβ†’[0,1]\mathbb{P} \colon \mathcal{G}_n \to [0, 1] with βˆ‘Gβˆˆπ’’nβ„™(G)=1\sum_{G \in \mathcal{G}_n} \mathbb{P}(G) = 1. Equivalently, it is the law of a random variable on a probability space with values in 𝒒n\mathcal{G}_n. A model of random graphs is a choice of such a measure β„™n\mathbb{P}_n for every nn. For 0≀p≀10 \le p \le 1, the binomial model G(n,p)G(n, p) is the measure with β„™(G)=pm(1βˆ’p)(n2)βˆ’m\mathbb{P}(G) = p^{m} (1 - p)^{\binom{n}{2} - m}, where mm is the number of edges of GG.

Remarks

In G(n,p)G(n, p) the (n2)\binom{n}{2} possible edges are present independently, each with probability pp; the probabilities add up to (p+(1βˆ’p))(n2)=1(p + (1 - p))^{\binom{n}{2}} = 1 by the binomial theorem. Example: G(n,1/2)G(n, 1/2) gives each of the 2(n2)2^{\binom{n}{2}} graphs in 𝒒n\mathcal{G}_n the same probability, so it is the uniform random graph on VV. Non-example: giving each of the 88 graphs on {1,2,3}\set{1, 2, 3} the weight 1/21/2 is not a random graph, because the weights add up to 44, not 11. A property holds asymptotically almost surely in a model if its probability tends to 11 as nβ†’βˆžn \to \infty. Another standard model is G(n,M)G(n, M), the uniform measure on the graphs in 𝒒n\mathcal{G}_n with exactly MM edges.
