Example
A real closed field is an ordered field with two properties. Every positive element has a square root in . Every polynomial of odd degree with coefficients in has a root in . The real numbers form a real closed field. A positive real number has a real square root. A real polynomial of odd degree takes values of both signs, so it has a root by the intermediate value theorem. The real algebraic numbers also form a real closed field, and it is countable.
The rational numbers do not form a real closed field: has no rational square root.
Remarks
The theory of real closed fields in the signature has quantifier elimination. So it is model complete, it is complete, and it is decidable. Every real closed field therefore satisfies the same first-order sentences as . In the signature of rings without , the theory is still model complete, but it no longer has quantifier elimination, since the order is defined by .
A field is real closed, for some ordering, exactly when is not a sum of squares in and is algebraically closed. The ordering is then unique: the positive elements are the nonzero squares.
