Statement

Let RR be a real closed field, for example ℝ\R. A subset of RmR^m is semialgebraic if it is a finite union of sets of the following form. {x∈Rm:f(x)=0, g1(x)>0,…,gk(x)>0}\set{x \in R^m : f(x) = 0, \ g_1(x) > 0, \dots, g_k(x) > 0} Here k≥0k \ge 0, and f,g1,…,gkf, g_1, \dots, g_k are polynomials in mm variables with coefficients in RR. Let n≥1n \ge 1, let π ⁣:Rn+1→Rn\pi \colon R^{n+1} \to R^n be the projection π(x1,…,xn+1)=(x1,…,xn)\pi(x_1, \dots, x_{n+1}) = (x_1, \dots, x_n), and let S⊆Rn+1S \subseteq R^{n+1} be semialgebraic. Then π(S)\pi(S) is a semialgebraic subset of RnR^n.

Remarks

The theorem is the geometric form of quantifier elimination for real closed fields. The set π(S)\pi(S) is defined by the formula ∃xn+1 φ(x1,…,xn+1)\exists x_{n+1} \, \varphi(x_1, \dots, x_{n+1}), where φ\varphi is a quantifier-free formula that defines SS. Quantifier elimination replaces it by a quantifier-free formula with parameters in RR, and the set defined by such a formula is semialgebraic.

Example: let S={(a,x)∈ℝ2:x2−a=0}S = \set{(a, x) \in \R^2 : x^2 - a = 0}, which is semialgebraic. Its projection to the first coordinate is {a:a≥0}\set{a : a \ge 0}, which is semialgebraic as the union of {a:a=0}\set{a : a = 0} and {a:a>0}\set{a : a > 0}.

The analogous statement fails for algebraic sets. The projection of the algebraic set SS above is [0,∞)[0, \infty), which is not the zero set of any family of polynomials in one variable. This is why inequalities are part of the definition.

For a student

By induction on nn, the image of a semialgebraic set under any polynomial map is semialgebraic, and so are closures, interiors and sets defined with quantifiers over RR. This makes semialgebraic sets the natural setting of real algebraic geometry, in contrast with real algebraic sets, which lack this closure property. It also shows that every subset of RR definable with ++, ⋅\cdot and << is semialgebraic, hence a finite union of points and open intervals. This is the starting point of o-minimality. Algorithms for quantifier elimination over ℝ\R, such as cylindrical algebraic decomposition, make the projection effective.
