Relativistic Doppler effect
Statement
Let a source of light move with constant velocity of speed relative to an inertial frame of a receiver. Let the source emit light of frequency , measured in the rest frame of the source. Let be the angle, measured in , between the velocity of the source and the direction in which the received light travels. Let and let be the Lorentz factor of . Then the frequency measured by the receiver is In particular, for a source moving straight towards the receiver () and straight away from it (),
Remarks
Proof idea: the wave vector and angular frequency form a four-vector , because the phase is the same in all frames. Apply the Lorentz transformation to the source frame: , using . Example: at in the receiver frame one gets , the transverse Doppler effect, which has no classical counterpart and is a form of time dilation. For and , . To first order in the formula agrees with the classical Doppler formula .

For a student
The cleanest derivation treats as a null four-vector and transforms it like any other four-vector. The same transformation gives the aberration of light, the change of the direction between frames. The longitudinal formula is used to measure the speeds of distant galaxies and of fast particles, and its square-root form makes it symmetric between source and receiver.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
