Definition

Let FF be a field of characteristic p>0p > 0, and let 𝔀\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra over FF. For xβˆˆπ”€x \in \mathfrak{g} let ad⁑x ⁣:y↦[x,y]\operatorname{ad} x \colon y \mapsto [x, y] be its adjoint map. For x,yβˆˆπ”€x, y \in \mathfrak{g} and 1≀i≀pβˆ’11 \le i \le p - 1, let si(x,y)s_i(x, y) be the element such that i si(x,y)i \, s_i(x, y) is the coefficient of Ξ»iβˆ’1\lambda^{i-1} in (ad⁑(Ξ»x+y))pβˆ’1(x)(\operatorname{ad}(\lambda x + y))^{p-1}(x), a polynomial in a variable Ξ»\lambda. A pp-map on 𝔀\mathfrak{g} is a map x↦x[p]x \mapsto x^{[p]} from 𝔀\mathfrak{g} to 𝔀\mathfrak{g} such that, for all x,yβˆˆπ”€x, y \in \mathfrak{g} and a∈Fa \in F:

  1. ad⁑(x[p])=(ad⁑x)p\operatorname{ad}(x^{[p]}) = (\operatorname{ad} x)^p.
  2. (ax)[p]=apx[p](a x)^{[p]} = a^p x^{[p]}.
  3. (x+y)[p]=x[p]+y[p]+βˆ‘i=1pβˆ’1si(x,y)(x + y)^{[p]} = x^{[p]} + y^{[p]} + \sum_{i=1}^{p-1} s_i(x, y).

A restricted Lie algebra is a Lie algebra over FF together with a pp-map.

Remarks

Example: let AA be an associative algebra over FF with bracket [x,y]=xyβˆ’yx[x, y] = xy - yx, and put x[p]=xpx^{[p]} = x^p. Clause 1 holds because ad⁑x=Lxβˆ’Rx\operatorname{ad} x = L_x - R_x, where the left and right multiplications LxL_x and RxR_x commute, so (ad⁑x)p=Lxpβˆ’Rxp=ad⁑(xp)(\operatorname{ad} x)^p = L_x^p - R_x^p = \operatorname{ad}(x^p) in characteristic pp. Clause 2 is clear, and clause 3 is Jacobson's formula for (x+y)p(x + y)^p in an associative algebra. In particular 𝔀𝔩n(F)\mathfrak{gl}_n(F) is restricted with the matrix pp-th power. Non-example: on 𝔀𝔩n(F)\mathfrak{gl}_n(F) with F≠𝔽pF \ne \F_p, the identity map x↦xx \mapsto x is not a pp-map, since clause 2 fails for a∈Fa \in F with apβ‰ aa^p \ne a. If 𝔀\mathfrak{g} has trivial centre, there is at most one pp-map, because clause 1 determines x[p]x^{[p]}. The algebra of derivations of any algebra over FF is restricted with D[p]=DpD^{[p]} = D^p, since the Leibniz rule gives Dp(ab)=Dp(a)b+aDp(b)D^p(ab) = D^p(a) b + a D^p(b) in characteristic pp.
