Riemann–Stieltjes integral
Builds on Partition of an intervalRiemann sumRiemann integral
Definition
Let be real numbers and let be functions. A tagged partition of consists of points and tags . Its mesh is , and its Riemann–Stieltjes sum is The function is Riemann–Stieltjes integrable with respect to , with integral , if the following holds. For every there is such that for every tagged partition of mesh less than . One writes .
Remarks
Example: if is continuous and is continuously differentiable on , then . By the mean value theorem, for some . Uniform continuity of lets one replace by with a small error, which leaves a Riemann sum of . With the definition is that of the Riemann integral.
Non-example: on let be on and on . If is a partition point, the only nonzero term is . It is for the tag and for any other tag. So sums of every small mesh take both values and , and is not integrable with respect to .
If is continuous and has bounded variation, then exists. Some authors use the limit over refinements of partitions instead of the mesh, which gives a slightly larger class of integrable pairs.
