Definition

Let RR be a ring with unit 11. An involution on RR is a map R→RR \to R, a↦a∗a \mapsto a^*, such that for all a,b∈Ra, b \in R:

  1. (a+b)∗=a∗+b∗(a + b)^* = a^* + b^*.
  2. (ab)∗=b∗a∗(ab)^* = b^* a^*.
  3. 1∗=11^* = 1.
  4. (a∗)∗=a(a^*)^* = a.

A ring with involution, or ∗*-ring, is a ring together with an involution.

Remarks

Clause 3 follows from the others: 1∗a=(a∗⋅1)∗=a1^* a = (a^* \cdot 1)^* = a and likewise a1∗=aa 1^* = a for all aa, so 1∗1^* is a unit element and equals 11. An element aa is self-adjoint or Hermitian if a∗=aa^* = a. Example: R=Mn(ℂ)R = M_n(\C) with A∗=A‾ TA^* = \overline{A}^{\,T}, the conjugate transpose. Clauses 1, 3 and 4 are clear, and clause 2 holds because (AB)T=BTAT(AB)^T = B^T A^T and conjugation is multiplicative. Example: the transpose on Mn(F)M_n(F) for a field FF, and g↦g−1g \mapsto g^{-1} extended linearly on a group ring ℤ[G]\Z[G]. Non-example: the identity map on M2(ℝ)M_2(\R) satisfies clauses 1, 3 and 4 but fails clause 2, since AB≠BAAB \ne BA for some matrices A,BA, B. If RR is an algebra over a commutative ∗*-ring KK, a ∗*-algebra also asks (λa)∗=λ∗a∗(\lambda a)^* = \lambda^* a^* for λ∈K\lambda \in K.
