Statement

Let ℋ\mathcal{H} be a complex Hilbert space with inner product ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot}, conjugate-linear in the first argument. Let AA and BB be symmetric operators on ℋ\mathcal{H}, and let ψ\psi be a unit vector with ψ∈D(A)∩D(B)\psi \in D(A) \cap D(B), Aψ∈D(B)A\psi \in D(B) and Bψ∈D(A)B\psi \in D(A). Write ⟨T⟩=⟨ψ,Tψ⟩\langle T \rangle = \ip{\psi}{T\psi}, σA=∥(A−⟨A⟩)ψ∥\sigma_A = \norm{(A - \langle A \rangle)\psi}, σB=∥(B−⟨B⟩)ψ∥\sigma_B = \norm{(B - \langle B \rangle)\psi}, [A,B]=AB−BA[A, B] = AB - BA and {A,B}=AB+BA\set{A, B} = AB + BA. Then σA2σB2≥(12⟨{A,B}⟩−⟨A⟩⟨B⟩)2+14∣⟨[A,B]⟩∣2.\sigma_A^2 \sigma_B^2 \ge \left( \tfrac12 \langle \set{A, B} \rangle - \langle A \rangle \langle B \rangle \right)^2 + \tfrac14 \abs{\langle [A, B] \rangle}^2. In particular σAσB≥12∣⟨[A,B]⟩∣\sigma_A \sigma_B \ge \frac12 \abs{\langle [A, B] \rangle}, the Robertson inequality.

Remarks

Put A0=A−⟨A⟩A_0 = A - \langle A \rangle, B0=B−⟨B⟩B_0 = B - \langle B \rangle and z=⟨A0ψ,B0ψ⟩z = \ip{A_0\psi}{B_0\psi}. The Cauchy–Schwarz inequality gives σA2σB2≥∣z∣2=(Re⁡z)2+(Im⁡z)2\sigma_A^2\sigma_B^2 \ge \abs{z}^2 = (\operatorname{Re} z)^2 + (\operatorname{Im} z)^2. Symmetry and the domain conditions give z=⟨ψ,A0B0ψ⟩z = \ip{\psi}{A_0B_0\psi} and zˉ=⟨ψ,B0A0ψ⟩\bar z = \ip{\psi}{B_0A_0\psi}. So Re⁡z=12⟨{A,B}⟩−⟨A⟩⟨B⟩\operatorname{Re} z = \frac12 \langle \set{A, B} \rangle - \langle A \rangle\langle B \rangle and Im⁡z=12i⟨[A,B]⟩\operatorname{Im} z = \frac{1}{2i} \langle [A, B] \rangle. In particular ⟨{A,B}⟩\langle \set{A, B} \rangle is real and ⟨[A,B]⟩\langle [A, B] \rangle is purely imaginary.

Example: on ℂ2\C^2 take the Pauli matrices σx,σy,σz\sigma_x, \sigma_y, \sigma_z, so [σx,σy]=2iσz[\sigma_x, \sigma_y] = 2i\sigma_z and {σx,σy}=0\set{\sigma_x, \sigma_y} = 0, and ψ=(1,0)\psi = (1, 0). Then ⟨σx⟩=⟨σy⟩=0\langle \sigma_x \rangle = \langle \sigma_y \rangle = 0, σσx=σσy=1\sigma_{\sigma_x} = \sigma_{\sigma_y} = 1 and ⟨[σx,σy]⟩=2i\langle [\sigma_x, \sigma_y] \rangle = 2i, so both sides equal 11.

The domain conditions cannot be dropped. On L2(0,2π)L^2(0, 2\pi), let AA be multiplication by θ\theta and B=−i d/dθB = -i\, d/d\theta with periodic boundary conditions, and ψ=(2π)−1/2einθ\psi = (2\pi)^{-1/2} e^{in\theta}. Then Bψ=nψB\psi = n\psi, so σB=0\sigma_B = 0, while formally [A,B]=iI[A, B] = iI would force σAσB≥12\sigma_A\sigma_B \ge \frac12. The inequality is saved because Aψ=θψA\psi = \theta\psi is not periodic, so Aψ∉D(B)A\psi \notin D(B).

For a student

For position and momentum, [X,P]=iℏ[X, P] = i\hbar on Schwartz functions, and the Robertson inequality gives Heisenberg's σXσP≥ℏ/2\sigma_X\sigma_P \ge \hbar/2. For spin components, [σx,σy]=2iσz[\sigma_x, \sigma_y] = 2i\sigma_z, so the bound depends on the state, and it vanishes when ⟨σz⟩=0\langle \sigma_z \rangle = 0. The proof is only the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality, so the relation holds in any inner product space; the work in the unbounded case is in the domain conditions.
