Semidirect product

Definition

Let NN and HH be groups, and let φ ⁣:H→Aut⁡(N)\varphi \colon H \to \operatorname{Aut}(N), h↦φhh \mapsto \varphi_h, be a group homomorphism. The semidirect product N⋊φHN \rtimes_\varphi H is the set N×HN \times H with the operation (n1,h1)(n2,h2)=(n1φh1(n2),h1h2)(n_1, h_1)(n_2, h_2) = (n_1 \varphi_{h_1}(n_2), h_1 h_2).

Remarks

The identity is (e,e)(e, e), and the inverse of (n,h)(n, h) is (φh−1(n−1),h−1)(\varphi_{h^{-1}}(n^{-1}), h^{-1}). The set {(n,e):n∈N}\{(n, e) : n \in N\} is a normal subgroup isomorphic to NN, and {(e,h):h∈H}\{(e, h) : h \in H\} is a subgroup isomorphic to HH. If φ\varphi is the trivial homomorphism, then N⋊φHN \rtimes_\varphi H is the direct product N×HN \times H. The dihedral group DnD_n is Z/nZ⋊φZ/2Z\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z} \rtimes_\varphi \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}, where the nonzero element of Z/2Z\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} acts by x↦−xx \mapsto -x.

Explanations

L1 human

In a direct product, the two factors do not interact. In a semidirect product, the second factor HH twists the first factor NN when you multiply. The homomorphism φ\varphi says exactly how each element of HH twists NN.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
