Seminorm
Builds on Vector spaceAbsolute value
Definition
Let be or , and let be a vector space over . A seminorm on is a map such that:
- for all .
- for all and , where is the absolute value.
Remarks
The two conditions imply and for all . Indeed , and then . A seminorm is a norm exactly when implies . Example: on the space of continuous real functions, is a seminorm; both conditions follow from the same inequalities for the absolute value at each point. It is not a norm, since it vanishes on a nonzero function supported in . Non-example: on , is not a seminorm, since . The kernel is a linear subspace, and induces a norm on the quotient of by it.
