Statement

Let RR be a discrete valuation ring with field of fractions KK. Let CC be a smooth projective geometrically connected curve over KK of genus g≥2g \ge 2. Then there are a finite separable extension K′K' of KK and a discrete valuation ring R′⊂K′R' \subset K' with R′∩K=RR' \cap K = R. Moreover there is a stable curve 𝒞′\mathcal{C}' over R′R' whose generic fibre is isomorphic to C×KK′C \times_K K'.

Here a stable curve over R′R' is a proper flat morphism 𝒞′→Spec⁡R′\mathcal{C}' \to \operatorname{Spec} R' with the following properties. Its geometric fibres are connected reduced curves of arithmetic genus gg whose only singularities are ordinary double points. Each smooth rational component of a fibre meets the other components in at least 33 points.

Remarks

The theorem is due to Deligne and Mumford; one of their proofs deduces it from the semistable reduction of the Jacobian of CC. The stable model 𝒞′\mathcal{C}' is unique up to isomorphism. In terms of moduli of curves, it says that the moduli space M‾g\overline{M}_g of stable curves satisfies the existence part of the valuative criterion of properness. The extension of KK cannot be dropped in general. The analogue for elliptic curves shows this: over K=ℚpK = \Q_p with p≥5p \ge 5, the curve y2=x3+py^2 = x^3 + p has additive reduction, so it has no semistable model over ℤp\Z_p. Over K′=ℚp(π)K' = \Q_p(\pi) with π6=p\pi^6 = p, the substitution x=π2x′x = \pi^2 x', y=π3y′y = \pi^3 y' gives y′2=x′3+1y'^2 = x'^3 + 1, which has good reduction.

For a student

The theorem is the key input in the proof that M‾g\overline{M}_g is proper. The base change K′/KK'/K is the arithmetic form of taking a root t=snt = s^n of the parameter. For abelian varieties, the analogue is Grothendieck's semistable reduction theorem. After a finite extension, the identity component of the special fibre of the Néron model is an extension of an abelian variety by a torus.
