Separable equation

Definition

Let II and JJ be open intervals of R\mathbb{R}, and let g:I→Rg : I \to \mathbb{R} and h:J→Rh : J \to \mathbb{R} be continuous functions. A separable equation is a first-order ordinary differential equation of the form y′=g(x) h(y),y' = g(x)\, h(y), for an unknown function yy of xx with values in JJ.

Remarks

Method: if h(y)≠0h(y) \ne 0, write the equation as y′/h(y)=g(x)y'/h(y) = g(x) and integrate. With antiderivatives HH of 1/h1/h and GG of gg, the solutions satisfy H(y(x))=G(x)+CH(y(x)) = G(x) + C for a constant CC. For each zero cc of hh, the constant function y=cy = c is a solution. The method above does not find these solutions. Example: y′=xyy' = x y has the solutions y=Cex2/2y = C e^{x^2/2} with a real constant CC. Exponential growth and the logistic equation are separable.

Explanations

L1 human

In a separable equation, the right side is a product: one factor depends only on xx and the other only on yy. Put everything with yy on one side and everything with xx on the other side, then integrate both sides.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
