Definition

Fix a language of predicate logic. A sequent is an expression Γ⊢Δ\Gamma \vdash \Delta, where Γ\Gamma and Δ\Delta are finite lists of formulas. The sequent calculus LK has the following parts.

  1. Axioms: A⊢AA \vdash A for each formula AA.
  2. Structural rules: weakening, contraction and exchange on each side, and the cut rule. The cut rule infers Γ,Π⊢Δ,Λ\Gamma, \Pi \vdash \Delta, \Lambda from Γ⊢Δ,A\Gamma \vdash \Delta, A and A,Π⊢ΛA, \Pi \vdash \Lambda.
  3. Logical rules: for each connective and quantifier, rules that introduce it on the left and on the right.

The logical rules for conjunction, disjunction, implication, negation and the quantifiers are these.

  • ∧\wedgeR: from Γ⊢Δ,A\Gamma \vdash \Delta, A and Γ⊢Δ,B\Gamma \vdash \Delta, B infer Γ⊢Δ,A∧B\Gamma \vdash \Delta, A \wedge B.
  • ∧\wedgeL: from A,Γ⊢ΔA, \Gamma \vdash \Delta infer A∧B,Γ⊢ΔA \wedge B, \Gamma \vdash \Delta and B∧A,Γ⊢ΔB \wedge A, \Gamma \vdash \Delta.
  • ∨\veeL: from A,Γ⊢ΔA, \Gamma \vdash \Delta and B,Γ⊢ΔB, \Gamma \vdash \Delta infer A∨B,Γ⊢ΔA \vee B, \Gamma \vdash \Delta.
  • ∨\veeR: from Γ⊢Δ,A\Gamma \vdash \Delta, A infer Γ⊢Δ,A∨B\Gamma \vdash \Delta, A \vee B and Γ⊢Δ,B∨A\Gamma \vdash \Delta, B \vee A.
  • →\toR: from A,Γ⊢Δ,BA, \Gamma \vdash \Delta, B infer Γ⊢Δ,A→B\Gamma \vdash \Delta, A \to B.
  • →\toL: from Γ⊢Δ,A\Gamma \vdash \Delta, A and B,Π⊢ΛB, \Pi \vdash \Lambda infer A→B,Γ,Π⊢Δ,ΛA \to B, \Gamma, \Pi \vdash \Delta, \Lambda.
  • ¬\negR: from A,Γ⊢ΔA, \Gamma \vdash \Delta infer Γ⊢Δ,¬A\Gamma \vdash \Delta, \neg A.
  • ¬\negL: from Γ⊢Δ,A\Gamma \vdash \Delta, A infer ¬A,Γ⊢Δ\neg A, \Gamma \vdash \Delta.
  • ∀\forallR: from Γ⊢Δ,A(y)\Gamma \vdash \Delta, A(y) infer Γ⊢Δ,∀x A(x)\Gamma \vdash \Delta, \forall x\, A(x), where the variable yy is not free in Γ,Δ,∀x A(x)\Gamma, \Delta, \forall x\, A(x).
  • ∀\forallL: from A(t),Γ⊢ΔA(t), \Gamma \vdash \Delta infer ∀x A(x),Γ⊢Δ\forall x\, A(x), \Gamma \vdash \Delta, where tt is a term.
  • ∃\existsL: from A(y),Γ⊢ΔA(y), \Gamma \vdash \Delta infer ∃x A(x),Γ⊢Δ\exists x\, A(x), \Gamma \vdash \Delta, where yy is not free in Γ,Δ,∃x A(x)\Gamma, \Delta, \exists x\, A(x).
  • ∃\existsR: from Γ⊢Δ,A(t)\Gamma \vdash \Delta, A(t) infer Γ⊢Δ,∃x A(x)\Gamma \vdash \Delta, \exists x\, A(x), where tt is a term.

A derivation is a finite tree of sequents. Each leaf is an axiom, and each other node follows from its children by a rule. The calculus LJ for intuitionistic logic is LK with the restriction that each right side has at most one formula.

Remarks

Example: the law of excluded middle has an LK derivation. Start from A⊢AA \vdash A and get ⊢A,¬A\vdash A, \neg A by ¬\negR. Then ∨\veeR twice gives ⊢A∨¬A,A∨¬A\vdash A \vee \neg A, A \vee \neg A, and contraction gives ⊢A∨¬A\vdash A \vee \neg A. Non-example: this is not an LJ derivation, because ⊢A,¬A\vdash A, \neg A has two formulas on the right. In fact ⊢A∨¬A\vdash A \vee \neg A has no LJ derivation at all. A sequent A1,…,Am⊢B1,…,BnA_1, \dots, A_m \vdash B_1, \dots, B_n means the same as the formula (A1∧⋯∧Am)→(B1∨⋯∨Bn)(A_1 \wedge \dots \wedge A_m) \to (B_1 \vee \dots \vee B_n). Some books use multisets or sets in place of lists, and then drop the exchange rule.
