Sequent calculus

Builds on Proof theory

Summary

A sequent calculus is a proof system whose lines are sequents Γ⊢Δ\Gamma \vdash \Delta. Such a sequent is read as "if all formulas of Γ\Gamma hold, then some formula of Δ\Delta holds". Gentzen introduced the systems LK for classical logic and LJ for intuitionistic logic in 1934. Each connective has rules that introduce it on the left and on the right. This symmetry makes the calculus the main tool of structural proof theory.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 13 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.
