Simplicial set
Definition
Let be the simplex category. A simplicial set is a functor , that is, a presheaf on . The elements of are the -simplices of . A map of simplicial sets is a natural transformation. Thus a simplicial set is a simplicial object in the category of sets.
Remarks
Concretely, a simplicial set is a family of sets with face maps and degeneracy maps , , that satisfy the simplicial identities. An -simplex is degenerate when it lies in the image of some . Example: the standard -simplex is a representable functor, so it is a simplicial set; its nondegenerate -simplices are the injective order-preserving maps . Non-example: a family of sets with only face maps and no degeneracy maps is not a simplicial set; such data form a semi-simplicial set. The category of simplicial sets is often written .
