Description
For each natural number , let be the totally ordered set with the usual order. The simplex category has the sets for as objects. A morphism is an order-preserving (monotone) map, that is, a map with whenever . Composition is the composition of maps. A composite of order-preserving maps is order-preserving, and identity maps are order-preserving, so is a category.
Remarks
Every morphism of is a composite of two kinds of basic maps. The face map , for , is the injective order-preserving map whose image misses . The degeneracy map , for , is the surjective order-preserving map that takes the value twice. For example, the map with , , is . One pictures as the standard -simplex with vertices : face maps include a face, and degeneracy maps collapse an edge. Functors from the opposite category are the simplicial objects, and functors are the simplicial sets.
