Definition
Let be a category, and let be the simplex category with opposite category . A simplicial object in is a functor . One writes for . A morphism of simplicial objects is a natural transformation from to .
Remarks
Equivalently, a simplicial object is a family of objects , , with face maps and degeneracy maps for , subject to the simplicial identities: Here and for the face and degeneracy maps , of . Example: for an object , the constant functor with and every , equal to satisfies all identities, so it is a simplicial object. Non-example: a covariant functor is not a simplicial object, because its maps go from to for faces; such functors are called cosimplicial objects. Simplicial objects in are simplicial sets.
