Definition
Let be a topological space. A subset is irreducible when and the following holds. If with and closed in the subspace , then or . A point is a generic point of a closed set when the closure equals . is sober when every irreducible closed subset of has exactly one generic point.
Remarks
For each point , the closure is irreducible and closed, with generic point . So the uniqueness part says that implies , and a sober space is T0. Every Hausdorff space is sober, because its irreducible subsets are single points.
Example: for a commutative ring , the spectrum with the Zariski topology is sober. An irreducible closed set has the form for a unique prime ideal , and is its generic point.
Non-example: an infinite set with the cofinite topology is not sober. is irreducible, since two proper closed sets are finite and their union is not . But each point is closed, so , and has no generic point.
