Statement

Let d≥2d \ge 2 and let 𝒢\mathcal{G} be a finite subset of the special unitary group SU(d)SU(d) with these two properties.

  1. 𝒢\mathcal{G} is closed under inverses.
  2. The subgroup generated by 𝒢\mathcal{G} is dense in SU(d)SU(d).

Then there are constants C>0C > 0 and c>0c > 0, depending only on 𝒢\mathcal{G} and dd, with the following property. For every U∈SU(d)U \in SU(d) and every ε∈(0,1/2)\varepsilon \in (0, 1/2), there are g1,…,gℓ∈𝒢g_1, \dots, g_\ell \in \mathcal{G} with ℓ≤Clog⁡c(1/ε)\ell \le C \log^c(1/\varepsilon) and ∥U−g1g2⋯gℓ∥≤ε,\norm{U - g_1 g_2 \cdots g_\ell} \le \varepsilon, where ∥⋅∥\norm{\cdot} is the operator norm.

Remarks

Proof idea: density and compactness give a finite word length ℓ0\ell_0 whose words form an ε0\varepsilon_0-net of SU(d)SU(d). To improve an approximation VV of UU, write UV−1U V^{-1}, which is close to the identity, as a group commutator ABA−1B−1A B A^{-1} B^{-1} of elements close to the identity. Approximate AA and BB recursively; the error of the commutator is much smaller than the errors of AA and BB. Each level multiplies the length by 55 and turns an error ε\varepsilon into about ε3/2\varepsilon^{3/2}, which gives c=log⁡5/log⁡(3/2)≈3.97c = \log 5 / \log(3/2) \approx 3.97. The proof is constructive and gives an algorithm that finds the sequence in time polylogarithmic in 1/ε1/\varepsilon.

Example: in quantum computing, {H,T}\set{H, T} with the Hadamard gate HH and T=diag⁡(1,eiπ/4)T = \operatorname{diag}(1, e^{i\pi/4}) generates a dense subgroup of SU(2)SU(2) modulo phases. So every one-qubit gate can be approximated to accuracy ε\varepsilon by O(log⁡c(1/ε))O(\log^c(1/\varepsilon)) gates HH, TT and T−1T^{-1}.

Density alone gives some approximating word; the content of the theorem is the polylogarithmic bound on its length. The standard proof uses the inverses in hypothesis 1 to form commutators.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is a statement about compact Lie groups, used as a compilation tool. A circuit of mm arbitrary gates, compiled to total accuracy ε\varepsilon, needs O(mlog⁡c(m/ε))O(m \log^c(m/\varepsilon)) gates from a universal set. This makes the class BQP independent of the choice of a universal gate set. Counting arguments show that length at least of order log⁡(1/ε)\log(1/\varepsilon) is needed, so the exponent cc cannot go below 11.
