Definition
Let be a field and let be a nonconstant polynomial. The polynomial is solvable by radicals over if there is a radical extension that contains a splitting field of over . The equation is then also called solvable by radicals.
Remarks
Equivalently, every root of lies in some radical extension of , since the compositum of finitely many radical extensions inside a common field is radical. Example: over splits in , with . This is radical, since and , so is solvable by radicals. Non-example: over is not solvable by radicals, because its Galois group is , which is not solvable; see the quintic equation. In characteristic , Galois' theorem on solvability says that is solvable by radicals if and only if its Galois group is solvable.
