Statement
Let be a complex Hilbert space, and let be a densely defined operator on with domain . Assume that is self-adjoint: , with equal domains, where is the adjoint of . Then there is a unique projection-valued measure on the Borel sets of such that, with :
- ;
- for all and .
Moreover, , where is the spectrum of .
Remarks
One proof uses the Cayley transform , a unitary operator for which is not an eigenvalue. The spectral theorem for bounded normal operators applied to gives a projection-valued measure on the unit circle. It is carried over to by the inverse of the map . Equivalently, if is separable, is unitarily equivalent to the multiplication by a real measurable function on some , on the domain of all with . Example: on , the momentum operator on the Sobolev space is self-adjoint; the Fourier transform turns it into multiplication by the variable , with spectrum . Self-adjointness, not mere symmetry, is needed. The operator on smooth functions with compact support in is symmetric, but it has no self-adjoint extension and no spectral resolution of this form.

For a student
The theorem is the mathematical basis of quantum mechanics, where observables such as position, momentum and energy are unbounded self-adjoint operators. It defines for Borel functions , in particular the unitary group that gives the time evolution of a quantum system. The probability that a measurement of in the unit state gives a value in is . Stone's theorem gives the converse correspondence between strongly continuous one-parameter unitary groups and self-adjoint operators.
