Speed of sound
Builds on Wave equationEuler equations
Definition
Let a fluid have an equation of state . It gives the pressure in terms of the density and the specific entropy , with . The speed of sound in the state is the number with So is the derivative of the pressure with respect to the density at constant entropy.
Remarks
Linearise the compressible Euler equations about a fluid at rest with uniform density . Then small perturbations of the pressure solve the wave equation , so they travel at speed . Example: for an ideal gas with constant ratio of specific heats , isentropic changes satisfy , so , with the specific gas constant and the temperature. For air, and , and at this gives . Non-example: Newton's value uses the derivative at constant temperature instead of constant entropy. It is too low, because sound waves are too fast for heat to flow between compressed and expanded regions.
