Definition
Let , and let be the set of spin configurations . A spin glass model on is given by:
- a family of independent real random variables, the couplings, each of which takes positive and negative values with positive probability;
- the random Hamiltonian ;
- for each inverse temperature and each sample of the couplings, the Gibbs measure on , where .
The couplings are quenched: they are fixed before the thermal average over is taken. The main quantity is the quenched free energy , where is the expectation over the couplings.
Remarks
Example: the Sherrington–Kirkpatrick model takes with independent standard Gaussian variables. A Gaussian variable is positive and negative with probability each, so clause 1 holds.
Non-example: the ferromagnetic Ising model with all fails clause 1, since no coupling is ever negative. Its ground states are the two constant configurations, and there is no frustration.
Many models restrict the couplings to the edges of a graph, as in the Edwards–Anderson model on ; then for the other pairs.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
