Split-quaternions

Builds on The quaternionsMatrix ringCayley–Dickson construction

Description

The split-quaternions form the 44-dimensional real algebra with basis 1,i,j,k1, i, j, k, a bilinear associative product with unit 11, and the rules i2=−1,j2=1,k2=1,ij=k=−ji.i^2 = -1, \quad j^2 = 1, \quad k^2 = 1, \quad ij = k = -ji. These give jk=−i=−kjjk = -i = -kj and ki=j=−ikki = j = -ik. The conjugate of q=a+bi+cj+dkq = a + bi + cj + dk is qˉ=a−bi−cj−dk\bar{q} = a - bi - cj - dk, and qqˉ=a2+b2−c2−d2q\bar{q} = a^2 + b^2 - c^2 - d^2.

Remarks

The split-quaternions are a quaternion algebra over ℝ\R that is not a division algebra, unlike Hamilton's quaternions. For example (1+j)(1−j)=1−j2=0(1 + j)(1 - j) = 1 - j^2 = 0. They are isomorphic to the ring of 2×22 \times 2 real matrices, by i↦(0−110)i \mapsto \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} and j↦(100−1)j \mapsto \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix}. Under this map the norm a2+b2−c2−d2a^2 + b^2 - c^2 - d^2 becomes the determinant. So they form a composition algebra whose norm has signature (2,2)(2, 2). They are the Cayley–Dickson double of ℂ\C with parameter μ=1\mu = 1.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
