Definition

Let TT be a complete theory in a countable signature, with infinite models, and let λ\lambda be an infinite cardinal. The theory TT is λ\lambda-stable if the following holds for every model MM of TT and every set AA of elements of MM with ∣A∣≤λ\abs{A} \le \lambda. The set S1M(A)S_1^M(A) of complete 11-types over AA has cardinality at most λ\lambda. The theory TT is stable if it is λ\lambda-stable for some infinite cardinal λ\lambda.

Remarks

An ℵ0\aleph_0-stable theory is called ω\omega-stable. Shelah proved that TT is stable if and only if no formula φ(xˉ,yˉ)\varphi(\bar{x}, \bar{y}) has the order property. The order property means that some model of TT has tuples aˉi,bˉi\bar{a}_i, \bar{b}_i for i∈ℕi \in \N with φ(aˉi,bˉj)\varphi(\bar{a}_i, \bar{b}_j) true exactly when i<ji < j.

Example: the theory ACF0\mathrm{ACF}_0 of algebraically closed fields of characteristic 00 is ω\omega-stable. For a countable set AA in a model KK, let kk be the subfield generated by AA. By quantifier elimination, a complete 11-type over AA is determined by the ideal of polynomials in k[x]k[x] that vanish at xx. This ideal is 00 or is generated by an irreducible polynomial, and k[x]k[x] has countably many polynomials, so there are countably many types.

Non-example: the theory of dense linear orders without endpoints is not stable. The formula x<yx < y has the order property: in (ℚ,<)(\Q, <) take ai=bi=ia_i = b_i = i, so ai<bja_i < b_j exactly when i<ji < j. For λ=ℵ0\lambda = \aleph_0 one sees the failure directly, with A=ℚA = \Q inside the model ℝ\R. Each irrational number rr realizes its own complete type over ℚ\Q, determined by the cut {q∈ℚ:q<r}\set{q \in \Q : q < r}. So S1ℝ(ℚ)S_1^{\R}(\Q) has size at least 2ℵ02^{\aleph_0}.
