Mechanics of deformable solids Viscoelasticity and materials with memory Example
Standard linear solid model
Builds on Maxwell materialRelaxation modulusCreep
Example
The standard linear solid, also called the Zener model, is a spring of modulus in parallel with a Maxwell material arm. The arm consists of a spring of modulus and a dashpot of viscosity in series. Write , where the arm stress satisfies . Eliminating gives Relaxation: a strain step gives with , so the relaxation modulus is Creep: a stress step gives , then the first-order equation , so rises exponentially to with time constant .
Remarks
It is the simplest spring–dashpot model that shows both an instantaneous elastic response and bounded creep, and both partial relaxation and a nonzero equilibrium modulus . For it reduces to the Maxwell material.
